Escaping Paradise: Bracing the Brutal Streets of Moresby in Dead Island Definitive Edition
Remember the sun-drenched beaches of the Royal Palms Resort? The pristine pools, the sparkling ocean, the luxury bungalows? Well, pack away your sunscreen, because our latest Xbox gameplay video takes a sharp, terrifying turn into Act II of Dead Island Definitive Edition.
We are officially leaving the resort behind and stepping foot into the blood-slicked, claustrophobic urban labyrinth known as The City of Moresby. If you thought dealing with infected in an open bikini area was tough, wait until you get cornered in a dead-end alleyway by a pack of hyper-aggressive Runners.
Check out our full breakdown of the city gameplay below, and see why Moresby remains one of the most atmospheric (and highly stressful) urban zones in survival-horror history.
The Vibe Shift: From Tropical Haven to Urban Hell
The moment you transition from the resort to the city, the entire tone of the game undergoes a massive shift. The wide-open vistas are replaced by tight streets, crumbling rooftops, barricaded storefronts, and a thick, oppressive sense of dread.
Running this on the Xbox, the Definitive Edition’s upgraded photorealistic lighting system truly shines—or rather, shadows. The way the sunlight cuts through the smog and illuminates the blood splatter on concrete creates a brilliantly eerie aesthetic.
Surviving the Concrete Jungle: Gameplay Takeaways
In our latest gameplay capture, we focused heavily on urban survival tactics. Here is what you need to know if you’re tackling Moresby on your next playthrough:
-
Verticality is Your Best Friend: The streets are a chaotic mess of Walkers and sprinting Infected. Whenever possible, take to the rooftops, cars, and scaffolding. It gives you a moment to breathe and plan your route.
-
Audio Awareness: In the resort, you could see threats from a mile away. In the city, you will often hear them before you see them. The echoes of a distant Suicider or the sudden screech of an Infected coming around a blind corner will keep your hands glued to the controller trigger.
-
Melee Control Customization: For our Xbox players, we highly recommend trying out the Analog Combat controls if you haven’t already. Swinging your blunt or bladed weapons using the right thumbstick adds an entirely new layer of visceral satisfaction when you’re clearing out alleys.
Survival Tip: Watch out for the quarantined areas and flooded streets. It’s incredibly easy to get turned around, and the city loves to throw hordes at you when you least expect it. Keep your modified weapons repaired and your stamina pool high!
What’s Next?
Our journey through Moresby is just getting started. Next up, we’ll be heading toward the Church to secure a safe haven, helping out the local survivors, and inevitably putting a few modified machetes to good use.
