From Trek to Trash: My HOKA Infini Hike Sandals Couldn’t Handle Thailand

Thailand. The land of smiles, incredible food, stunning beaches, and challenging terrain. I packed my bags, eager for adventure, and on my feet were a brand new pair of HOKA Infini Hike sandals. I’d heard great things about HOKA’s comfort and durability, and these seemed like the perfect companion for everything from temple hopping to jungle treks.

Oh, how wrong I was.

It’s with a heavy heart (and increasingly sore feet) that I have to share a cautionary tale for anyone considering the HOKA Infini Hike for serious travel. After less than a month of active use in Thailand, these supposedly rugged sandals began to disintegrate.

My journey started innocently enough. The sandals were comfortable, offering decent support as I explored Bangkok’s bustling streets. I thought, “These are great!”

Week 1: Early Warning Signs

As I ventured north to Chiang Mai and started some light hiking, I noticed a slight separation of the sole from the upper near the arch on one sandal. “Hmm,” I thought, “maybe just a bit of wear and tear.” I pushed it back into place, hoping it was an isolated incident.

Week 2: The Cracks Appear

The “slight separation” quickly escalated. Both sandals started showing significant signs of distress. The adhesive holding the layers of the sole together seemed to be failing spectacularly. What started as a minor gap soon became a gaping maw, collecting dirt and small pebbles with every step. I tried to ignore it, to walk around it, to will it to stay together. It was a losing battle.

Week 3: The Unraveling

By the time I hit the islands, the Infini Hikes were living on borrowed time. The straps, initially so secure, began to feel loose and less supportive. The sole separation was so bad that I could literally feel the ground through parts of the sandal. It became a constant distraction, forcing me to walk more carefully, fearing a complete blow-out at any moment.

The Final Nail in the Coffin

The last straw came during a simple walk to a waterfall. One of the straps completely detached from the sole. That was it. My HOKA Infini Hike sandals, which promised so much, had utterly failed after roughly 3-4 weeks of moderate use. I ended up having to buy a cheap pair of flip-flops from a local market just to get by.

What Went Wrong?

I’m not sure if it was the humidity, the heat, the varied terrain, or simply a manufacturing defect, but the HOKA Infini Hikes were not up to the task. For a brand known for its robust hiking footwear, this was a massive disappointment. I expected durability, especially given the price point.

My Advice:

If you’re planning an adventurous trip that involves lots of walking, varied terrain, and potentially humid climates, I cannot recommend the HOKA Infini Hike sandals. They simply do not hold up. While comfortable for a short while, their longevity in real-world, demanding conditions is severely lacking.

Don’t make the same mistake I did. Invest in something truly durable, or prepare to replace your footwear much sooner than you’d expect. My “Infini Hike” was anything but. More like an “Infini Disappointment.”
